Chapter 23

Aidan

We decided to continue towards Caralow. The caravan was weeks behind us, and I was anxious to see what resources the city had that we could pilfer for Mei’s advancement.

“It started off as a sect, but over the years, long before my parents' time, it grew into a large city,” Mei explained.

“I think they are the Frozen Roses or something like that,” Naomi added. “Most of the sect are ice artists, but I’m unsure how roses are connected. I know it’s supposed to be cold. They supposedly have large formations that pull in vast quantities of water aura and make it cold.”

That made me think of the cold boxes in the underground ruin. I didn’t know how they worked, but they made things cold inside. The thought of an entire city-sized formation drawing in water aura from the ocean and chilling it sounded absurd.

“I believe their path is called the path of the Frozen Rose,” Mei corrected. “It’s cold year-round too. In the class I attended on basic scripting, the elder used Caralow as an example of nested formations. The sect raises the ambient aura within the city so that their cycling rooms can draw in that higher density aura much faster. It facilitates a greater aura flow that isn’t possible with only a single formation.”

“That’s incredible,” I said, awed by the thought of visiting someplace new. It was something I attributed to the high arts because only a high artist could travel safely.

“Wait until you see the snow,” Naomi grinned. There was still tension in how she carried herself, but I hoped the residual pain she felt would fade as the wounds grew smaller.

“The part of my journey where I went north was in the summer. It never snowed in my village, but my mom used to tell me stories about it. I always wondered what ice falling from the sky would be like,” I said. The wonder of seeing something new was tempered by the memory of what began my journey.

“It will be quite an experience,” Mei responded, smiling my way. It brightened her face, which warmed my heart to see.

As the city neared, we encountered other roads branching off ours. We also met other caravans making their way to Caralow from other towns or villages I knew nothing about.

We kept to ourselves as we made our way passed them. We were limited to Naomi’s pace, but Condensation high artists could still move faster than caravans. Even injured ones, which Naomi ensured we understood. The guards watched us, their eyes appreciating Naomi and Mei as we hurried past.

No one seemed to appreciate me, though. Instead, I earned a few stares of contempt, but thankfully, no one bothered us. I wondered if I was ugly. It wasn’t something I had considered before. Advancement improved how people looked, but everyone started from different places. Mei was a prime example. It wasn’t the first time I noticed the attention Mei garnered. I wondered what that must be like having to deal with every day.
